Iris Ann Groves, 91, of Elgin passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at Lexington Health Care, Streamwood, where she was a resident. She was born March 26, 1927, in Elgin, a daughter of Burton and Josephine Rahn. She married Robert Groves on June 1, 1946. He passed away on April 26, 2004.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Louis Rahn, a sister, Rose (Robert) Hardy, and a daughter-in-law, Josephine (Michael) Groves. She is survived by five children, Marcia (Fred) Bixby, Cary; Michael (Christine) Groves, Elgin; Jay (Doris) Groves, Bloomington; Linda (Joel) Ludwig, Woodstock; and Lori (Eugene) Brown, Fox River Grove. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Iris was raised in Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School in 1945. Before starting and raising a family, she worked for David C. Cook publishing. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Elgin. She frequently volunteered at the church and at Gail Borden Public Library, Elgin. Iris and Bob enjoyed annual family vacations to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and family travels to Colorado, Wyoming, California , and many other U.S. states. Later adventures took them on winter trips to Naples, Florida. Bob and “I,” as they were known, also loved bowling, golf, and entertaining family, friends and relatives. Iris was a voracious reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles and word games. She was a wonderful mother, who adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and relished spending time with them. She would comfort anyone feeling stress by saying, “this too shall pass.” Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church, 1735 W. Highland Ave., Elgin. Burial will be private at Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-8 PM in the Laird Funeral Home, 310 S. State St., Elgin. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Elgin or the Gail Borden Public Library.
