Melvin “Mel” Wilkening was born in Elgin on July 31, 1916 to Erna and Arthur Wilkening and went to meet Jesus on March 26, 2018. He was a lifelong Elgin resident, a member of Golden K Kiwanis and an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He lived long enough to celebrate his 101st birthday, his 77th wedding anniversary, and witnessed his beloved Chicago Cubs win the 2016 World Series. Melvin was always fascinated by trains and loved to build elaborate model train set-ups in his basement. He was one of the founding members of the South Elgin Model Railroad Club. He was quite the joke teller, and no matter what the situation or the conversation, he always managed to come up with a good one or two. He loved to play cards, bowl and golf and shot a hole-in-one at Wing Park Golf Course. Mel was a WWII veteran and served with the TEC 5 Company C 177th Engineering Battalion. Survivors include his wife Dorothy (Oldenburg), who was the love of his life; his children, Richard Wilkening, Carol (Jim) Stonecipher, David (Judy) Wilkening and Cathleen (Jim) Newby; his grandchildren, Chad (Angie) Stonecipher, Aimee (Gary) Tousignant, James (Cortney) Newby and Joshua (Joanna) Newby; and his great grandchildren, Katelyn and Brett Stonecipher, Emma and Mason Tousignant, Quaid Newby, Nora, Nelson and Noele Newby; his sister Ruth Eadler of Sierra Vista, AZ, his brother Robert (Phyllis) Wilkening of Wadena, MN, and several nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his nephew and god son Craig Eadler. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Arthur, Herman and John. In lieu of flowers, donations/memorials can be made to Seasons Hospice Foundation, 8537 Solution Center, Chicago, IL. 60677-8005 or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 195 Nesler Road, Elgin, IL 60124.
