Greta “Peggy” Homfeldt, nee Eklov, 100, of Elgin, passed away peacefully at Presence Pineview Care Center, St. Charles on January 15, 2018. Peggy was born November 24, 1917 in Chicago the daughter of Alvar and Ellen Eklov. As her daughters were growing up, she was a room mother and girl scout leader. She was part of the founding group of Church Women United and served as historian and press secretary for many years until the organization disbanded last year. She was honored as Woman of the Year and was also active with meals on wheels. She was a graduate of Elgin Community College with and Associate’s Degree of Arts at the age of 67.
Peggy was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church, Plato Center and had been a nursery Sunday school teacher for 28 years at Faith United Methodist Church, Elgin before uniting with Cornerstone. She served on the on the Board of Christian Education for many years and was involved with vacation bible school and worked with the soup kitchen. The Fidelis class was her Sunday school class. Surviving are her daughters, Judith (Francisco) Mejia and Sandra Robinson. She was the proud grandmother of 5 grandchildren, Ellen (Greg) Schlef, David Mejia, Monica (Kevin) Loughran all of New York and Julie and Christopher Robinson of Elgin; She was great grandmother to Jack and Carlie Schlef and Violet Loughran. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter and her sisters, Martha Goodsell, Ruth Wagner and Betty Brethauer. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00AM, Saturday, January 20, at Conerstone United Methodist Church 41W170 Russell Rd., Plato Center. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 19 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the services in the church.
