Sherman O. Ovelmen, age 82, of Elgin passed away on January 3, 2018. Sherman was born on March 21, 1935 in Ottawa, IL to the late Oliver and Helen Ovelmen. On June 18, 1960 he married, Carol (nee Holmberg) Ovelmen. He earned a Purple Heart during his military service in Korea. He taught Biological Sciences at Elgin High School throughout his professional career. Sherman loved cross country and track and coached at Elgin Community College. He was an aviation and sailing enthusiast and won several awards for his rubber airplane designs. One of his most proud accomplishments was that he engineered and designed a turbine system that harnessed energy from the wind (WindGen, the answer is in the wind.) Sherman was actively involved in Meals on Wheels, and other charities. He volunteered at homeless shelters and other services which distributed Christmas gifts to poor families. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Scott (Karyn), Keith (Erin), Jim (Nicole); his grandchildren: Sean, Sara and Zora; and his sisters: Deidra, Marcia and a twin, Janice. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at a later date. Laird funeral home is assisting the family. 847-741-8800
