Nancy Caliendo (Maddalone), 87, devoted wife and caregiver to late husband: Joseph; preceded in death by her parents: Caroline and George Maddalone; brothers: Fred, George and Roy; her sister: Marie; brother-in-law: Tom; and sister-in-laws: Florence, Lois and Betty.

Survivors include her many beloved nieces and nephews: Greg, Peggy, Bruce (Janie), Randy (Chickie), Donna (Lou), Pat (Ralph), Karla, Terry, Corky (Fran), Carrie (George), Dean, Chris, and Jeffrey; and step-sisters: Joanne and Toni. Nancy was great aunt to 29, great great aunt to 35, great great great aunt to 3, godmother to 11, stepmother to 3 and step grandmother to 5. Although never a biological mother, she was “the other mother” to many.

In her younger years, Nancy was an excellent swimmer, who accumulated medals in aqua ballet and diving in competitions at Riis Park in Chicago and the Chicago Park District.

She had a beautiful singing voice and sang at banquets and weddings. She played classical music on the piano, made silk flower arrangements and wrote poetry, two of which were published. Most of all, she enjoyed her family and friends, and tried to share the importance of this joy with everyone.

Her family and friends will remember her with affection, as she always remembered to keep in touch by phone calls and birthday cards to all.

Nancy was a supporter of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, “Prayers in Hope” at St. Jude and Alexian Brothers’ Foundation, where she worked for 6 years. Keep her in your hearts and prayers-a very generous, caring and loving soul.

Visitation will be on Thursday November 16, 2017 from 4-8:00 PM at the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, with memorial mass on Friday at 10:00 AM at St. Laurence Catholic Church, Elgin. Masses on her behalf or donations to St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN would be most sincerely appreciated.
