Steve Koukas, 91, of Elgin, passed away on October 29, 2017 in his home. He was born on March 8, 1926 in Joliet, IL the son of Thomas and Stella Koukas. He was a Veteran, and served in the US Navy during W.W.II. He had owned and operated Steverino’s Tavern for many years prior to retirement. Later he was employed at Jewel-Osco in the produce department, where he continued his hard work ethic, but mostly enjoyed mingling with everyone he saw. He was an amazing family man, devoted husband, proud and playful grandfather – there was nothing more important to him than those he loved. Steve was a people person, loved gathering with friends, and enjoyed life, while “doing it his way”. He will be deeply missed.
He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Elgin, serving as Elder, and in various other roles throughout the years.
Steve is survived by his children: Christy (Jason) Schmidt, Juanita Koukas and Jim Koukas; grandsons: Kyle, Ryan and Stephen; his brother-in-law, Larry (Shirley) Kagel, along with much extended family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Nancy, dear sisters Margaret and Alice, fond brother-in-law Gust, a son in infancy Christopher and daughter Penny.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday November 4, 2017, at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 101 N. Spring St., Elgin, IL 60120, with Rev. Hannibal Frederich officiating. Burial with Honors will follow at Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be on Saturday at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of service.
